Letter to Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic from Buzz Osborne, 1986

Random capitalization and a few odd hand-typos have been changed so they wouldn’t be distracting, but otherwise:

“Life here is about the same. Ko-Bain and Dale went up to his aunt’s house and made a tape of some of Kurt’s songs. I was pretty impressed. Some of his songs are real killer! Despite the poor sound quality. It sounds good, but could have been better with a little more time. Nevertheless, it’s still a great demo. I think he could have some kind of future in music if he keeps at it.”

In which Morrissey is showered with flowers during “This Charming Man.” No wonder a critic in 1983 wrote: “If the boy’s head is anything to go by, The Smiths are going to be B-I-G.” A born frontman, I say. (Still waiting for vintage footage to surface of the band playing “Panic” as Moz is fanned and fed grapes.) Either way, can’t wait to read his memoir.

Gram Parsons Talks Meeting Emmylou Harris

Chris happened to mention to me when I was there, he said, “You know we were in Washington a while back and I heard this chick singer. She’s nothing but a folk singer, but she could probably be developed into a really good country singer.” Well Chris didn’t know that she was from Birmingham, Alabama, and that she knew more about country music probably than both of us did.

I met her at the train station and she took me over to her house and we sat in the kitchen… I was thinking to myself “Okay, well let’s see if she can cut it or not.” So I thought of one of the hardest country duets i could think of to do, which was “That’s All It Took,” and she just sang like a bird, man. And I said, “Well that’s it,” and I sang with her the rest of the night and she just kept getting better and better. The more I looked at her… She’s got fantastic eye contact. She can sing anything that you’re doing in perfect harmony as long as you look at her. If you raise your eyebrows, if you’re going up on a note, she goes right up with you in perfect pitch. She’s beautiful.

Dearest Rob.

Thanks for writing. Wow! Framing T-shirts. Next thing we know we’ll have our plectrums framed in “Rock Café”s around the world! Or not.

I’m sitting in the control room of a studio in London. – ‘RAK’ where we’re recording new stuff, for the album & so on. Phil is currently playing a wierd ride cymbal thing on Nice Dream. Jonny’s in the corner drawing with an Apple Mac.

Hope you like the new stuff!

Elliott Smith – “We’re All Friends Now” (Live, 1995)

Footage from a 1995 Elliott Smith live set filmed by Mary Lou Lord has resurfaced on YouTube. Check out more clips here, and the above tune, which cites Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like a Hole” in a jab at a record industry showcase.

They look like sharks swimming in the swells.
The feedback starts and the singer yells,
“I’d rather die than give you control,”
But he’s already sold the whole damn thing for a big loan.
